Indigenous Academic Tutoring & Mentorship Program

tutor teaching during a lesson to indigenous youth participants

The Indigenous Academic Tutoring & Mentorship (IATM) Program connects local Indigenous youth with current Indigenous university students from Western. Tutors work one-on-one or in small groups to support students in subjects such as Math, Science, History, English, and more.

While academic support is a key component of the program, IATM also focuses on building confidence, fostering positive relationships, and supporting students’ personal growth. There are no costs associated with this program.

All IATM tutoring and mentoring sessions are held on-site at participating schools, providing support in a familiar environment for students.

IATM Program Goals

  • Offer bi-weekly tutoring and mentorship drop-in sessions for Indigenous youth in Grades 9-12
  • Encourage students to complete assignments and strengthen their understanding of course content
  • Support the development of organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Foster one-on-one or small-group mentoring relationships that help students build academic skills and confidence in a safe, culturally respectful environment

How to Become Involved

Grad coaches, educators or community organizations must coordinate directly with the Community Enhancement Coordinator who will work with the students’ and tutors’ availability to coordinate visits to schools.
